For years, an old stationery box squatted under my desk.

My colleagues at the record label must have thought I was hoarding compact discs or snacks in there (perfectly industry-sanctioned behaviours!). No one suspected the anxiety that shadowed my box of belongings. I was so sure that one day, my marketing role would be inhabited by someone else and I’d be shipped off the premises, just as a sage branch was lit in my honour by the office shaman.

Then it happened. Not right away though. When BookTok, Dark Academia and Sleep Science bedfellowed our artist roster, we orbited a bronzed age of Spotify. Bonuses blindsided my angst, touring artists buoyed our charting prospects and I finally ditched the box for more legroom. As I munched on my bacon and jammy egg roll one morning, I was summoned by the powers-that-be.
