Succour, Or Why I’m All In With Sunsets

A walk through an ordinary afternoon and the unexpected memories it releases.

By Melissa Abrahams

There are times in our lives when we become inevitably jammed in the eddying whirl of sad, terrible things. When this happens, we can lose all sense of meaning and purpose.

We can feel abandoned, pushed out of the warmth of human community. We can become distraught, feeling that we are at our wit’s end. At these times, some of us turn to something greater, hoping against hope that we will be granted some respite. We call for help. We cry and pray. We beseech and make offerings. We fail and flail, and our faith is tested. We wait by the door, hoping that our knock will be answered. And sometimes it is. Sometimes the door is opened, even if just a crack, and we feel the light of benevolence fall upon us.

Grace. Devotion. Luminosity. Faith.
