There are places in every life that exist mostly because we pass them without looking. The corner of the garden where nothing was planted. The chair beside the window. The few seconds after a conversation ends.
We tend to think of attention as something we give to important things. But attention has its own strange democracy. It can make a neglected corner of the world feel newly significant.
Perhaps that is what stories do best. They don’t necessarily add anything to the world. They teach us how to see what was already there.
