A woman waits for a phone call that may change what she thinks she knows about her father.

The light outside the kitchen window had turned the colour of an old bruise.

She put the kettle on, though she didn’t want tea. It was something to do with her hands while she waited.

When the phone finally rang, she let it ring twice before answering.
